At Turning Point Therapy we understand anxiety can take over.
Avoidance is often a temporary fix. Together we can discover your strength to open up and live fully.

Anxiety can affect many areas of your life

Is stress and worry a constant companion?

Do you focus on the worst possible outcome?

Are you self-conscious around people?

Do you feel terrible if you get something wrong, make a mistake or have nothing to say?

These are just some of the ways that overwhelming anxiety can take over, making it difficult to form relationships and complete daily tasks. It can cause you to be distracted, agitated, self-conscious and hard to connect with those around you.

One way of thinking about anxiety is that our emergency system is on alert, signalling we are in danger, leading to behaviours that try to keep us safe.  Such as avoidance, defensiveness, shutting down, and even attacking those around us.

You may find that you have a hard time relaxing or calming down the activation you are feeling. You may find that you are easily prone to angry outbursts or panic attacks.

We are happy you are here to start living a more fulfilling life.

Here at Turning Point Therapy, we work with our clients to develop awareness of the nature of anxiety and your unique relationship to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

The simple answer is no.  By paying attention to and learning to live with a comfortable level of anxiety, it can become our friend.  It is natural to feel nervous when starting something new or having to finish a project. Anxiety can keep us going, alert and motivated. When our anxiety starts to cause us to be paralysed and stuck, we can benefit from seeking counselling.

No, they have differences.  This is not to say that fear may be underneath the anxiety. A simple way of seeing the difference is that fear is present-focused, and anxiety is future-focused.  Anxiety is an experience of chronic tension and activation in our nervous system that is focused on trying to prepare us for something. In comparison, fear is an immediate surge in our nervous system related to an immediate threat and survival. Fear from past trauma situations can get stuck in our nervous system if we have been unable to process it. This can contribute to anxiety as a trauma response.

We do not believe it is necessary, and some people can benefit from medication in addition to therapy. We do not prescribe medication, but we support many people who take medication to relieve their anxiety. We always recommend people talk to their doctor about their anxiety symptoms. Taking medication is a personal choice.

There can be lots of reasons why we are experiencing anxiety and that it has built up to a continuous level. Counselling is an excellent opportunity to explore this. There may not be an immediate answer, but often, it is a combination of sudden events in your life, having a sensitive system, trauma and upbringing. Our counsellors are experienced in many approaches and are here to create a safe space to help you understand your anxiety.
