The Benefits of In-Person Counselling

There is a lot to be said for that in-person experience.

  • You have your full presence with each other (not just a head and shoulder)
  • Co-regulation is easier. Experiencing your therapist's calm regulation will affect your nervous system directly.
  • It is much easier to feel your therapist's presence and compassion.
  • You don't have to worry about technology breaking down.
  • You can reflect and relax into yourself without feeling you are losing connection with your counsellor.
  • Conversation flows more naturally because you don't get cut off if you both speak at the same time.
  • Experiential work (moment to moment focusing, somatic movement, whole body awareness, etc) easier to do.

The Benefits of Online Counselling

Clients who prefer online therapy have found it to be just as effective as in-person therapy. Here are some specific ways that it can be particularly useful:

  • Allow people in more remote communities to access professional counselling
  • Give folks who have limited time or mobility to access a counsellor
  • Can also reduce barriers for people who are struggling with things that make it hard to get out of the house, like depression, agoraphobia, panic attacks, and chronic pain or illness 
  • Folks who are new to counselling may find it reduces the anxiety of meeting a therapist
  • When something interferes with getting to an in-person session we can easily change to online
